Mesaoria, Geology and History Marathovounos, St. Mamas in Vitsada, Lefkonico and the Gypsum Cave in Platani Sunday May 5
A journey into history and geology. Our first stop will be made in the village of Marathovouno perched on the northern side of the plain. A small village, home to one of the most important contemporary artists of Cyprus, Christoforos Savvas. We will then continue to the nearby village of Vitsada, where we will see St. Mamas the only church of Cyprus built entirely out of gypsum. Nearby Lefconico is an important village both in the economic and litterary history of Cyprus. We will stroll in the village and see its two quarters, the architecture, the square and we will visit the recently restored by the Technical Committee church of Archangel Michael. Our trip will end with the visit to the "Gypsum Cave" in the village of Platani.
